A step-by-step guide to base repair, edge tuning, and waxing with the Dakine Super Tuning Kit, plus the mistakes that ruin a home tune.

Quick answer

Work in this order: inspect the base, fill any damage with P-Tex, file and polish the edges, then wax and scrape. The Super Tuning Kit bundles the iron, wax, scrapers, files, and P-Tex so you can do all four stages in one session.

Why the order matters more than the tools

Edge work throws metal shavings and waxing leaves shavings of its own. If you wax first and file second, you grind that debris into the wax layer and have to start over. Repairing and filing before waxing keeps the base clean and lets the wax bond properly.

A home tune is also cumulative. Skipping the base inspection hides a core shot that will only grow; skipping the edge polish leaves a burr that catches on snow. The kit gives you the files and stones to handle both, but only if you use them in sequence.

What the kit covers and what it does not

The Super Tuning Kit is a full tune in a bag: adjustable-temperature iron, wax, scrapers, files, P-Tex, and a multi-pocket case. That covers the common home jobs, from filling a gouge to setting a fresh wax layer.

It does not include a base grinder or a stone grind, so deep structural damage or a badly railed base still belongs with a shop. Treat the kit as seasonal maintenance, not a replacement for a professional base service.

Your tune-up sequence, step by step

  1. Inspect and clean the base: Brush off dirt and old wax, then run your fingers along the base to find gouges, burrs, or dry patches. Wipe the base with a clean cloth before any repair. Mark any damage with a wax pencil so you do not lose track of it once the base is scraped.
  2. Fill damage with P-Tex: Light the P-Tex and drip it into the gouge until it sits slightly above the base. Let it cool completely, then scrape it flush with a plastic scraper. Do not scrape while the P-Tex is still warm; it will pull out of the hole and leave a shallow pit.
  3. File the edges: Set the file in a guide at the manufacturer's base and side angles, then push it along the edge in one direction. Count strokes so both edges match. A common mistake is sawing back and forth; that rounds the edge instead of sharpening it.
  4. Polish with a diamond stone: Follow the file with a diamond stone to remove the burr left by filing. Keep the stone wet and lighten your pressure as the edge smooths out. Check the edge with a fingernail: if it catches evenly along the length, the burr is gone.
  5. Wax with the adjustable iron: Set the iron to the wax manufacturer's recommended temperature, drip wax along the base, and iron it in thin passes. Do not hold the iron still in one spot. If the wax smokes, the iron is too hot; turn it down before you burn the base.
  6. Scrape and brush: Let the wax cool fully, scrape with a plastic scraper at a low angle, then brush from tip to tail to open the structure. Scrape until the wax comes off in thin shavings rather than soft smears; that is your sign the wax has set.

Kit at a glance

  • Super Tuning Kit - Castlerock: Includes an adjustable-temperature iron, wax, scrapers, files, P-Tex, and a large multi-pocket case. You can complete base repair, edge work, and waxing without buying each tool separately, and the case keeps the wax and files organized between sessions.
