Match leash length and cord thickness to wave size and board length. Use this guide to choose between 8', 9', and 10' leashes and the right urethane thickness.

Quick answer

Choose an 8' leash with 5/16" cord for waves up to double overhead, a 9' leash with 1/4" cord for longboarding up to a couple feet overhead, and a 10' leash with 5/16" cord for double to triple overhead conditions. Match cord thickness to wave power, not just board length.

Why length and thickness are separate decisions

Length controls how far your board can travel from you after a wipeout. A longer leash gives the board more room to tumble, which is useful on a longboard where you move around, but it also creates more swing weight and drag. Thickness controls strength and stretch. A thicker urethane cord resists breaking in powerful waves, but it is heavier and stiffer, which can feel awkward on smaller days.

That is why you should not pick a leash by board length alone. A 9' longboard in head-high surf may need a different cord thickness than the same board in double-overhead surf. Use wave size as the primary filter, then adjust length for your board and style.

When an 8' leash makes sense

An 8' leash is a good middle ground for shortboards and step-ups in waves up to double overhead. It keeps the board close enough to avoid excessive tangling but still gives enough distance for safety. If you surf mostly beach breaks with punchy but not giant surf, 8' is often the most manageable length.

The trade-off is that 8' can feel short on a longboard when you are walking to the nose. It also offers less room for the board to separate from you in a heavy hold-down. If you regularly surf double overhead or larger, move up to a 10' leash with a thicker cord.

When a 9' leash is the better call

A 9' leash is the classic longboard length. It gives you enough cord to cross-step and hang ten without constantly feeling the leash tug at your ankle. A calf cuff can reduce cord wrap around your feet, which is a common annoyance on longboards. This length works well for waves up to a couple feet overhead, especially when paired with a 1/4" cord.

The limitation is strength. A 1/4" cord is not built for double-overhead plus conditions. If you are taking a longboard into serious swell, you need a thicker cord and likely a longer leash. Do not assume that a 9' leash is automatically the right choice for all longboard surfing.

When a 10' leash is necessary

A 10' leash is for double to triple overhead waves. The extra length gives your board more distance in turbulent water, and the 5/16" cord provides the strength needed for powerful conditions. This is not a leash you buy for small days; the extra cord and thickness can feel cumbersome and may drag in the water.

If you are surfing heavy reef breaks or big-wave spots, a 10' leash with a thick cord is a sensible default. But check the condition of your leash regularly. A thicker cord does not make a worn leash safe.

Decision rules for choosing leash length and thickness

  • Wave size up to double overhead: Choose an 8' leash with 5/16" cord for shortboards, or a 9' leash with 1/4" cord for longboards in waves up to a couple feet overhead.
  • Waves double overhead to triple overhead: Choose a 10' leash with 5/16" cord. The extra length and thickness provide more security in powerful surf. If you are unsure between 8' and 10', err toward the longer, thicker leash for heavy conditions.
  • Longboard with nose riding: Pick a 9' leash with a calf cuff and 1/4" cord for waves up to a couple feet overhead. The calf cuff reduces cord wrap at your feet.
  • Board length and leash stretch: A leash should be at least as long as your board. For longboards over 9', consider a 10' leash even in moderate surf to avoid tension at the rail.
